MANILA – An anti-drugs advocate is calling on the government to stop the show of the popular boy band One Direction in the country which is set for next year.
This comes after a video of Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik of the British pop group smoking what they called a joint went viral online last Wednesday.
The video clip, obtained by the Daily Mail newspaper, appears to have been filmed by the 22-year-old Tomlinson in the back of a car in Peru during the South America leg of the band's world tour.
Tomlinson and Malik are also heard joking about "illegal substances" as they smoke in the back of a vehicle.
The band's other members -- frontman Harry Styles, Liam Payne, and Niall Horan -- are believed to have been travelling in different cars and are not seen in the video.
According to Jonathan Morales, founder of the anti-drugs group Laban ng Pamilyang Pilipino, the group does not set a good example for the many Filipino teens who idolize them.
Morales is worried that this recent controversy may worsen the country's problems concerning illegal drugs.
Put together for a British television singing contest in 2010, One Direction has developed a giant, fiercely loyal following of young girls worldwide.
Their concert in Manila is scheduled for March 21 and 22, 2015 and fans came in droves to buy tickets immediately after they were released.
Tickets are priced from P1,150 for general admission to P17,950 for VIP. – with reports from Agence France Presse
